ADHD and behavior challenges in children and teens
Trouble with attention or behavior can have more than one cause. A careful evaluation sorts out what is driving it and what will help.
A careful evaluation comes first
Inattention, restlessness and outbursts can come from ADHD, but also from anxiety, depression, learning differences, poor sleep, or stress at home or school. Often more than one is involved. I gather information from parents, your child, and, with permission, teachers and any prior testing, so the diagnosis fits your child.
Behavior challenges
I believe kids do well when they have the right skills to do so, and many kids struggle to develop those skills. I consider developmental history, temperament and family dynamics, and work with parents on strategies for success at home and at school.
Treatment
When ADHD is the right diagnosis, treatment usually combines parent guidance, school supports such as a 504 plan, and, when appropriate, medication. When medication is part of the plan, I monitor benefits and side effects closely and adjust when a first medication doesn't work well.
Many children with ADHD also have anxiety or mood symptoms. Because I treat both, I can address them together rather than one at a time.
